Phynova, the pioneering and leading life science company that develops proprietary natural healthcare products from active compounds found in plants, is ready to help transform the nation’s health. On the 3rd December, Phynova hosted the Sigesbeckia Sunrise Tai-Chi event at The Shard in London.
The event was well supported by media and influencers from the heath and fitness world. The Phynova team introduced guest to the positive benefits of Phynova Joint and Muscle Relief tablets. Phynova Joint & Muscle Relief Tablets is the UK’s only pain management remedy to contain Sigesbeckia – a plant which has a long history of use in Oriental Medicine to relieve symptoms of all forms of musculoskeletal pains. Modern research shows Sigesbeckia has anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antioxidant and cartilage protective effects.
Guests enjoyed a morning Tai Chi session from the top of The Shard and were treated to magnificent vistas of the waking city of London. Phynova also introduced the guests to Dr Gemma Newman, Phynova’s ambassador and a practicing GP doctor who said: “Pre-clinical trials show that the active ingredient Sigesbeckia has a number of potentially beneficial mechanisms of action, including anti-oxidant activity, a role in regulating pain pathways and reducing inflammation. It has been used for over 1000 years and Phynova’s MHRA approval also proves it is a safe and reliable source of Sigesbeckia. There’s a place for natural plant powered remedies alongside other treatments, and Phynova’s Joint & Muscle Relief Tablets provide a chance at natural relief of pain-related conditions that affect so many people in the UK”.

PHYNOVA JOINT & MUSCLE RELIEF – Q & A
Is Phynova Joint & Muscle Relief Tablets the first product to contain Sigesbeckia as a THR in the UK?
Yes, Phynova Joint & Muscle Relief Tablets (PJMRT) is the only Sigesbeckia THR approved by the MHRA in the UK, although the herb Sigesbeckia has been used by practitioners in traditional herbal medicine for years throughout Europe.
What is the THR claim for Phynova Joint & Muscle Relief Tablets?
PJMRT is indicated for relief of backache, rheumatic & muscular pain, general aches and pains in joints and muscles, and minor sports injuries
What is the active ingredient in Phynova Joint & Muscle Relief Tablets?
The active ingredient in PJMRT is an extract of the plant, Sigesbeckia, a plant used in Chinese medicine that’s clinically proven to have analgesic, anti-inflammatory antioxidant and cartilage protective effects.
How does Sigesbeckia work?
Conventional Non-Steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAID) painkillers such as ibuprofen, relieve pain and inflammation by inhibiting the cyclooxygenase (COX) family of enzymes. COX is an important enzyme in the inflammatory pathway. It controls the formation of prostaglandins that cause pain and inflammation. Inhibition of COX consequently reduces the production of prostaglandins, resulting in less pain and inflammation. Unfortunately, COX also catalyses the production of other types of prostaglandins that produce the protective layer in your stomach, therefore long-term use of NSAIDs can cause heartburn and gastric ulcers.
Research has shown that unlike conventional NSAIDs, the active molecules in Sigesbeckia do not inhibit the cyclooxygenase (COX) family of enzymes. Instead, Sigesbeckia works earlier on in the inflammatory pathway, reducing the production of other molecules that propagate inflammation. The result is the same, lower production of inflammation-specific COX and prostaglandins, with the consequent reduction in pain and inflammation, but by not reacting with COX in the stomach, Sigesbeckia is said to be gentle on the stomach and does not have the same gastric side-effects.
What is the science behind Sigesbeckia to help with muscle and joint pain?
Phynova has a dossier of all the studies submitted to the MHRA in order to obtain a THR. The two studies highlighted below may be of particular interest and are available on request:
- Park et al, 2008. Anti-inflammatory activities of ent-16αH, 17-hydroxy-kauran-19-oic acid isolated from the roots of Siegesbeckia pubescens are due to the inhibition of iNOS and COX-2 expression in RAW 264.7 macrophages via NF-κB inactivation. European Journal of Pharmacology, 558: 185-193.
- Hong et al, 2014. Anti-inflammatory effects of Siegesbeckia orientalis ethanol extract in in vitro and in vivo models. Biomed Research International, 2014 (2): 329712
Were these studies carried out using Phynova Joint & Muscle Relief Tablets?
They were conducted using the species and part of Sigesbeckia (the aerial parts) that is the active ingredient within PJMRT.
Why is this product so different?
Currently apart from NSAIDS there very few products on the market that can help relieve symptoms of joint and muscle pain, backache, rheumatic & muscular pain, general aches and pains in joints and muscles, and minor sports. PJMRT is a natural alternative to NSAIDs, with no known side-effects.
Does Phynova work immediately?
Phynova is better suited for conditions that don’t resolve naturally within a relatively short period of time and with its safety profile it can be taken long term. Some people report improvement within days whereas others report differences within two to four weeks – the timeframe is going to be dependent on the underlying condition.
Can you take Phynova prophylactically?
There is no research to support this. PJMRT should be used in line with its THR approval.
Can you take Phynova Joint & Muscle Relief Tablets alongside NSAIDS?
Yes, as it has a different mode of action, PJMRT can be taken with other NSAIDs.
Does PJMRT interact with any medications?
PJMRT is not contra-indicated for use with other medicines and there are no known side-effects. If you are however taking other medication, you should always speak with your GP who is familiar with your medical history and can advise appropriately.
Is Phynova suitable for long term use?
NSAIDs and other oral pain medications should not be used continuously for more than ten days, PJMRT do not have this limitation and can be used long term because it is gentle on the stomach.
How do I take Phynova Joint & Muscle Relief Tablets?
It is recommended that one tablet is taken, twice daily (one in the morning and one at night). Tablets should be swallowed whole with a little water or other liquid and keep to the stated dose.
Is Sigesbeckia in Phynova Joint & Muscle Relief Tablets organic?
The Sigesbeckia we use is collected from the wild. As it is not cultivated, it cannot be certified as organic.
Are you a member of the British Herbal Medicine Association?
Yes, Phynova is a member of the BHMA.
Is Phynova Joint & Muscle Relief Tablets made here in the UK or made overseas?
Sigesbeckia is grown in China and so we make the active pharmaceutical ingredient (Sigesbeckia extract) in China in a pharmaceutical manufacturing facility (which is audited to ensure compliance with European Good Manufacturing Practice). The extract is then shipped to the UK where the tablets are made in a pharmaceutical manufacturing plant that is audited and inspected by the MHRA.
What is a THR?
Traditional Herbal Medicine is a license that is granted by the Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Authority known as the (MHRA) and this license is granted to products that meet certain criteria to ensure the product is safe and meets specific quality guidelines. A THR product must have evidence of at least 30 years of use, 15 years of which must be shown to have been in the EU.
